“Christian Nationalism” has garnered increased public attention recently, especially as prominent right-wing candidates in the midterm elections embraced the Christian Nationalist label. Many of the most extreme politicians in office have rallied the support of a base that invokes Christianity as the grounding of their anti-immigrant, anti-LGBTQ, anti-abortion, anti-regulation, pro-gun agenda. This base is organizing and holding rallies around the country, including here in New York State.
How do Christians who understand Christian Nationalism to be a distortion of our faith confront this movement? How do we engage effectively and faithfully in the public sphere in this political climate?
You’re invited to join FOCUS Churches on Wednesdays in January for a 4-week study exploring these questions. Led by Rev. West McNeill and Rev. Joe Paparone of the Labor-Religion Coalition of NYS, we’ll discuss the historical roots of Christian Nationalism, its impact on our own communities, and how and why Christians and other people of conscience can counter it.
In preparation for each class, we will have a brief reading and/or video to review. The first reading, “The Capitol Insurrection Was As Christian Nationalist As It Gets” is linked here.
