Support the Building that Supports the Community
Become a Friend

For over 165 years, Westminster Presbyterian Church has been far more than a house of worship—it is a vital civic anchor in downtown Albany. Located just steps from the New York State Capitol, we continue a proud tradition of downtown hospitality, keeping our historic doors wide open as an accessible, inclusive gathering space for all of Albany.

The invitation is simple: You don’t have to be a member of our congregation to be a vital part of our community.

While our church members fund our spiritual programming, the Friends of Westminster fund is dedicated to the upkeep, utilities, building maintenance and repairs, and preservation of this historic architectural treasure.

What Happens at Westminster

Our building is a bustling sanctuary for vital daily services, civic engagement, and cultural expression:

Feeding & Direct Service Programs

We host the FOCUS Churches Breakfast Program, providing hot meals, nutrition, and dignity to our neighbors experiencing food insecurity.

A Safe Haven for Healing

Every week, our rooms provide a home base for vital peer support and healing, including local addiction recovery groups, grief support circles and a weekly meeting of the Homeless Coalition.

Civic & Grassroots Action

Located steps from the legislative buildings, Westminster serves as a practical launching pad for statewide lobbying groups, community organizing forums, and a neighborhood polling place.

Arts, Culture & Recreation

From large-scale theatrical productions and acoustic concerts in our historic sanctuary to community meals, neighborhood chess club meetings, and public events like The Longest Table, our spaces are always alive with activity.

Why Your Support Matters Now

“When we were looking for a venue that combined historic beauty, excellent acoustics, downtown convenience, and true affordability for a local performance, Westminster was the obvious choice.” — Local Theater & Concert Organizer

🍞 The Story of the Toaster Our Friends initiative was originally inspired by an unexpected community response. When a critical kitchen appliance failed, a friend of our community sent out an appeal to fund a new commercial toaster, warming oven, and dishwasher repairs. The overwhelming response revealed just how deeply our neighbors care about the practical, functional capacity of this building to serve people in need.

The Reality of 2026 Today, Westminster stands as one of the last remaining downtown spaces with the scale and flexibility needed to anchor both secular and faith-based community programs. However, the cost of preserving a heavily used historic building continues to climb—our building costs have increased by 22% in 2026 alone.

We are deeply committed to keeping our spaces affordable for the grassroots initiatives that depend on us. To sustain this momentum, we need a broader base of support from our neighbors, local history buffs, and community partners.
