Earth Day Sunday – Welcome to our Guest Preacher, Rev. Gretchen Elmendorf
Rev. Gretchen Elmendorf has ministered for over 20 years in United Church of Christ churches in Massachusetts and ecumenical and interfaith settings. An environmental justice advocate for decades, she served on the United Church of Christ Climate Council and Southern New England UCC Conference Environmental Task Force. Since moving to Albany last spring, she joined Green Faith and is a Climate Reality leader dedicated to ending C02 emissions from the fossil fuel industry and supporting the rapid transition to renewables and net zero. Fun fact: She earned a master of divinity from the same school Rev. Heather attended, Harvard Divinity School, where she also ministered at Memorial Church.
For the past ten years, she was a climate justice faith leader fighting with a frontline community in South Shore, MA, against the third largest gas company in the world. Enbridge forced a potentially explosive 7700 horsepower gas plant/compressor into the most heavily and densely populated site in the country, threatening the lives of 1000’s, emitting heavily cancerous toxins into an environmental justice community where children and adults are already dying of cancer and leukemia in high rates. Rev. Gretchen joined a statewide fight with FRRACS — the Four River residents against the compressor — to fight the corruption of this industry and complicit state and federal organizations, which enabled what an environmental professor from BU describes as a “lethal carbon bomb.”
She is currently a member of Journey UCC Church in Albany. Her faith infuses her with hope that we have all it takes to stop global warming and that each of us is precious in this existential pursuit.
