Many of us are blessed with reliable access to medical care, educational opportunities, and no worries about our next meal or when it will come.
Through our West Africa Mission, Westminster’s African Mission Committee works to help provide these basic necessities for children in Bernard Farm, on the outskirts of the Liberian capital of Monrovia, in the Rock Hill community of Bernard Farm.Working with the leadership of Kingdom Embassy School (K.E.S.), we fund and monitor three initiatives that support the health, education, and nutrition of the approximately 200 children K.E.S. serves.
Health Program
Ms. Korlu Jallah, RN, oversees our health program. She makes regular visits to the school compound and sees children and staff who present health problems. Her work often involves scrapes, sores, and bug bites, but also includes malaria screening and care for more serious sprains and intestinal issues. Over the years of Westminster’s support, Nurse Jallah’s work has significantly improved school attendance and undoubtedly prevented minor problems from worsening.
Expanded Access to Clean Water and Toilets
We are working with the Kingdom Embassy staff to restart the expansion of access to safe, clean water for both the school and surrounding community. This initiative also includes providing adequate toilets at the school. We hope to complete these projects by late 2026.
Education
In terms of education, our work in Liberia is evident in our provision of dozens of tuition scholarships that enable children to attend the K through 12 offerings at K.E.S. We also periodically ship barrels of books and school supplies and sponsor special event activities for the students
Nutrition
To address issues of poor nutrition, we fund a healthy, protein-rich lunch program for an average of 70+ grateful children (and their parents!) twice a week. Currently, we can only help the youngest students, whose cognitive development depends not only on good instruction but also on protein in their diets.
These programs that are significantly and directly impacting children.
We receive regular reports and financial accountability from our colleagues at the school. None of these efforts would be possible without the ongoing support of the Westminster community, along with some small locally funded grants.
