Building brighter futures for children in Ghana, Liberia, & Sierra Leone through education and health initiatives

At Westminster Presbyterian Church, our West African Mission began over two decades ago with the invaluable input of immigrants, many of whom became cherished members of our congregation. Through their connections, we established enduring partnerships in Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone with congregations, schools, orphanages, and a non-governmental organization (HOCAP), laying the foundation for impactful humanitarian projects.

For over 20 years, we’ve worked collaboratively with local partners in Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone to build brighter futures by actively bringing clean water, education, health, and essential nutrition services to vulnerable children in these three countries in West Africa. This unwavering commitment, fueled by many generous donors, has transformed countless lives and communities.

The 2024 campaign to raise $15,000 to support transformative West African mission initiatives is officially underway!

For 2024, we remain committed to education, health, and nutrition programs in Liberia; working collaboratively with our Ghana partners—especially in a community still impacted by recent flooding; and are forging a new relationship in Sierra Leone with an emerging secondary school in an underserved region.

This year, as hoped, we are expanding efforts to serve more children:

  • Ghana: This year, we will emphasize working with our Ghanaian mission partners to bring health and educational services to more rural communities – especially in an area still impacted by recent devastating flooding. Also coming up this year, a team from Westminster will travel to Ghana in October to participate in the international Ghana Action Network conference. Following the conference, the team looks forward to meetings with our Ghanaian mission partners and will visit project sites.
  • Liberia: Moving forward, we remain committed to education, health, and nutrition programs. We are widening our scope of support at the Kingdom Embassy School and promoting increased school attendance, particularly among girls. This includes sponsoring a nurse for medical assistance and health education, as well as a nutrition program for young children. Over time, our successful microloan program has expanded and provides sustainable income-generating opportunities for residents of this rural area who do not have access to traditional bank loans.
  • Sierra Leone: We are forging a new relationship with an emerging secondary school in a very underserved region of the country. The initial focus identified in partnership with the school leadership is on providing much-needed equipment (e.g. printer, generator, solar energy panel) to print educational materials needed for students.
