2024 Mission Initiatives in West Africa: Spotlight on Ghana

Vital Mission Partnership Work in Ghana

In 2024, Westminster Presbyterian Church is engaged in mission initiatives that significantly impact Ghana. This year, our focus is on supporting communities that have faced unprecedented challenges, including the devastating flooding in the fall of 2023. Through our strong partnership with the Home of Care and Protection (HOCAP) and under the leadership of The Rev. Barbara Asempa, we are committed to helping these communities rebuild their lives and futures. Our initiatives include:

  • Providing financial aid for flood victims.
  • Enhancing computer literacy for students.
  • Supporting the newly established Mama Alice Health Clinic in Nyitawuta.

As we continue our mission, we invite you to join us in these vital efforts to bring hope, education, and healthcare to those in need in Ghana.

Support Victims of Devastating Flooding

In the fall of 2023, Ghana experienced significant flooding and devastation from a double hit of a planned release of excess water from the Volta Dam (a/k/a Akosombo Dam), followed by heavy rains.  At the time, over 35,000 people were displaced in this rural region of Ghana. In addition to losing their homes, many also lost their livelihoods.  Although the waters have receded, the long-lasting repercussions still impact the low-lying communities. Most at risk is the farming needed to feed the inhabitants.

This past spring, our longtime mission partner and friend, Rev. Barbara Asempa, visited Westminster and presented the dire situation and how our partner, HOCAP, is helping residents rebuild their lives and their livelihoods.

An especially compelling need is to find ways to support youth in this impacted region. To this end, HOCAP is focusing on raising funds to build a vocational training center.  Westminster will join in this effort by providing financial support and the need for educational materials is also envisioned.

Computer Literacy is Key to Success for Students

Westminster continues to join our Mission partners in Tema, Ghana, to provide computer literacy opportunities for children and youth. Refurbished computers and printers are collected, packed, and shipped regularly to be used by students in computer labs at several schools.

Ongoing Support for the Mama Alice Health Clinic

The Mama Alice Health Clinic in rural Nyitawuta, Ghana, has opened, and much-needed medical care is being provided to residents in this area where no services had previously been available. This opening signifies a collaborative endeavor between the Home of Care and Protection (HOCAP) and Westminster, aiming to provide vital healthcare services to underserved areas. The establishment of the Mama Alice Health Clinic showcases a shared commitment to accessible healthcare solutions to underserved and remote populations.

We are currently running a Medical Supplies Collection, Collection Dates: August 30–September 29, to be delivered in October when a team from Westminster Presbyterian Church will be traveling to attend the Ghana Mission Network Meeting in Tema, Ghana.

African Family Night – September 21, 2024

African Family Night is a great way for the community to come together and support mission projects undertaken with our partners in Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. All projects aim to help build brighter futures for vulnerable children through vital health and education services. To continue offering these services, our goal is to raise $15,000 this year.

This is sure to be a special evening with a time for:
