Tuesday was a lovely day for standing on State Street while holding our banner, “Vigil for Racial Justice.”
While Mabel and Ned were chatting with Heather, Margaret, and Paul, Elizabeth emailed our sister-in-law, who lives in Oregon.
Elizabeth described the Vigil and wondered if “we make a difference.”
From Oregon, Carolyn replied, “It’s always worth the effort–at least it shows someone cares enough to be there.”
Looking across at Emmanuel Baptist, I thought about how Westminster Church shows that someone cares enough to be there in the city where people live, some in comfort and others in need. The natural reaction when facing an impossible task is to run away. Achieving racial justice in our lifetime is impossible given the racism that survives in our troubled land.
But neither of these great old churches has run away because, even today, someone cares enough to be here.
