A QUIET DAY
Tuesday’s Vigil for Racial Justice was highlighted by the visit from two members of the Racial Justice Committee of the Presbytery of Albany. Judy Hartley invited them to share their experience in seeking our common goals.
As Presbyterians, we are united by a covenant rather than by a contract. A rabbi has defined the difference:
A contract is about interests. A covenant is about you and me coming together to form an “us.” Contracts benefit, but covenants transform.
It was a good day, and folks were walking by. The mailman was delivering mail, a large garbage truck was grinding its way toward the river, and several bicycle riders whizzed by—including one man with a small child in a seat over the rear fender who guided the bike with one hand while checking his phone with the other!
We adjourned to the church library where our visitors spoke of the decision of Presbytery to cancel the debt of a Black congregation owed to Presbytery for the purchase of a Presbyterian Church; one gesture in our efforts to break down the walls which have separated Black and white.
We’ll be on State Street next Tuesday at 12 noon – join us.
